As we enter into a new Lenten season, we must remember that this is a time for prayerful reflection. It is a Christian custom to give things up during Lent, typically something that we love like sweets. The Daniel Fast is commonly practiced for this purpose. It is also common for some to use this period to take up new habits for the purpose of general self improvement. Whatever your personal sacrifice, you must remember that the most important aspect of Lent is to do all of this prayerfully and mindfully. We go through this exercise in order to become closer to God, so it is best to make this decision carefully.
This year Martin Luther King Jr. Christian Church has a plan for the Lenten season, which we would love for you to participate in with us. Each week will have a dedicated focus covering a variety of important subjects. Below you will find an outline of our weekly plans:
February 17th – February 20th
Consecration/Unplugged Week
Refrain from TV and radio, except for inspirational purposes
February 22nd – February 27th
No Sweets Week
Abstain from all forms of sugar or sugary foods and beverages, not to include fruit or vegetables that are naturally sweet
March 1st – March 6th
Watch Your Words Week
Be mindful of you conversations by refraining from gossip and foul
March 8th – March 13th
No Meat Week
Fast from meat products
March 15th – March 20th
Acts of Kindness Week
Do something kind for someone each day of the week
March 22nd – March 27th
Half Day Fast Week
Fasting from all foods and beverages, except water for 12 hours (6am-6pm)
March 29th – April 3rd
Reconciliation Week
Strive to mend broken relationships
This plan is merely a suggestion, so feel free to modify the parameters of the weekly rules if necessary. As always, do what’s best for you. Consult with your doctor if necessary.
